“What is a residential school?” Amik asks.

“Residential schools were big schools in faraway places. I had to leave my family, and I really missed them. I missed speaking my language and smudging every morning.”

“That sounds sad,” Amik says to him. Moshoom nods.

Then Amik has an idea. “You should come to my school!”

The next morning, Moshoom walks to school with Amik and his brother. “See, Moshoom. My school is just down the street.” Moshoom smiles.

Amik shows him his work on the bulletin board. “See, Moshoom, we are learning our language.” Moshoom looks very proud. Then Amik introduces him to his teacher. “See, Moshoom,” he says after. “Mr. Bee is nice.” Moshoom has tears in his eyes.

“Oh no Moshoom, please don’t cry,” Amik says.

“It’s okay,” he tells Amik and smiles. “I am happy.” Amik smiles too.

Together they sit with everyone and smudge to welcome a new day.
