The last time I danced with my brother was in Hydaburg, Alaska. We travelled to our father’s birthplace because he and our stepmother were hosting a potlatch to give dance screens to each clan in the village. Guests from all over were invited to witness the potlatch so that this event would become part of the public record. After a year of planning, the day of the potlatch finally draws near, Haida, Tlingit, Timsyen, and Yaats Xaadee guests come from near and far to witness this event. Days before the feast they arrive on float planes and ferries, in cars and motorhomes, to help prepare for the big day.
