Chapter 2 The New Kid in Town
“Hey Gad, old buddy, whatcha got for lunch?” Every day at 12:45 p.m., when the cafeteria at Copernicus Middle School was busy, Tank sidled up to his friend Gadget and asked the same question: “Hey Gad, old buddy, whatcha got for lunch?”
Sometimes Tank asked a different question: “Whatcha eatin’?” More often than not Tank asked, “Can I have one of your sweet potato fries?” or, “Are you gonna eat that taco?”
Today, Gadget had a tray of baked chicken fingers, a dinner roll, and steamed green beans. Tank eyed Gadget’s tray as he bit into his turkey sandwich.
“Did you finish that report for Mrs. Mooney?”Gadget asked, ignoring Tank’s culinary queries. “It’s due today.”
“Of course I did. Mrs. Mooney, Mrs. Smooney … she’s going to read my report and send it off to Hollywood. It’s so good they’ll make a movie out of it.”
“I doubt that,” Gadget said. “It’s only about plate tectonics.”
“Mrs. Mooney will be in tears when she reads how I describe how Earth’s plates slam into each other causing earthquakes,” Tank boasted.
“She’ll cry all right, because you can’t even spell earthquakes, let alone tectonics,” Gadget joked.
“Hey, who’s that girl Pi and Athena are talking to over there? I haven’t seen her around before. Is she new?” Tank pointed across the cafeteria to a girl in jeans with shoulder-length black hair and piercing eyes. She was sitting with Pi and Athena, two of Tank and Gadget’s best friends.

“That’s Molly Stone,” Gadget said matter- of-factly. “She just moved to town with her mother. They live on Lombardi Street. She’s in Ms. Jenson’s homeroom. She just started today. I think she’s in our world history class.”
“Wow, how do you know so much about her?” Tank said. “What did you do, hack into the school’s computer system again?”
“Don’t be a dork burger. I nearly got expelled because of that,” Gadget said ashamed. “I just wanted to see if I could do it. As for Molly Stone, I simply went up to her and said hi. I was the new kid in school once, and I wanted to make her feel at home. You should do the same. You do know how to say hi?”
“So, she’ll be in Mr. K’s class this afternoon?”
“She will, but it’s not Mr. K’s class anymore, at least not for a while. He broke his leg the other day in a freak accident.”
“Really?” Tank asked.
