My name is Yuyen. I live in San Francisco. I am a Chinese Buddhist. There are many different kinds of Buddhism. But all Buddhists are followers of the Buddha, which means “the enlightened (en-LY-tend) one.” Enlightenment is the complete understanding of the world and of life and of your place in life. We believe that the Buddha understood all of these things. We try to become enlightened by following
the Buddha’s teachings.
My mother and father pray to the Buddha. They teach me to say prayers that help us tell the Buddha our needs and ask for his blessings. My parents taught me that prayer helps us to be closer to the Buddha. Prayer also helps us understand the teachings of the Buddha. The teachings of the Buddha help us understand life.
