One True Friend

When I first moved here, I tried to tell him about our family and tried to teach him how to draw, but he doesn’t care about that. He tunes me out whenever I try to tell him anything. His eyes look blank and he says, “Yeah, yeah, whatever.” He acts like he wants to me to hurry and shut up. I try hard not to be angery with him and to understand him.

They’re just being themselves. I think that they changed because the double-dutch contest became a big event. And maybe the look down on the sisters because they don’t always have new clothes and they’re sort of poor.

People used to do that to my family. My mother would say, “They don’t know us, so they don’t know what they’re missing.” I guess people talked about us because we were different. But I didn’t know that we were different. I thought that all families were like us.
