DESERT VIEW
In the morning, Ms. Stanwyck gathered the Art Club members together in the motel lobby.
“Today, we’ll take a short bus ride,” she said. “We’re going to see the Desert View Watchtower.”
I glanced at my friends. None of us spoke. Gum and Sam were hunched close together, looking at her detective’s pad. Cat didn’t notice, or she pretended not to notice.
“The watchtower was designed by a famous architect named Mary Colter in the 1930s,” Ms. Stanwyck explained.
Sam lifter her head. “A woman?” she said. “Cool.”
Ms. Stanwyck smiled at her. “Yes,” she said. “She designed the tower to resemble the traditional buildings of the Native Americans who lived in the area.” She looked at me. “And Edward, the view from the top of the tower is said to be the best in the park. You’ll get some great shots.”
“Great,” I said, trying to smile.
But my mind was still on the awkwardness among my friends.
