On Halloween, Amberlyn arrived at the Anderson House with her dress in a garment bag slung over her arm, and she waved from the porch as her father’s Subaru Outback backed out of the driveway. Lyle, who planned to go as David Bowie (as Jareth the Goblin King), had enlisted Amberlyn’s help with her makeup. Normally that sort of thing was Noemi’s job, but for some reason Lyle had asked Amberlyn. The request delighted her-sent pinspricks up and down her legs – and Amberlyn watched more makeup tutorials than she’d ever thought possible in preparation for getting it right.
Amberlyn might not have been much for costumes on her own,but as Lyle discussed her plans for the holiday, she had eventually come around. She’d phoned it in last year, showing up to Lamplight wearing a pointed witch’s hat from Five Below. Now, AMberlyn unzipped her bag, and the shiny taffeta skirt of her gown rustled free, alternating from blue to purple in the light of Lyle’s bedroom. The two of them had brainstormed Amberlyn’s costume together and searched Halloween supply and thrift stores for parts. Amberlyn would wear a vintage prom dress with parts of a werewolf costume and go as Beauty *and* the Beast this year.
